A Guide to Drug and Alcohol Rehab

What You Should Know Before Choosing a Rehab Center

It can be very tricky when choosing the perfect rehab facility for yourself. When doing your research, there are a couple different things you need to keep in mind to look out for. Here are some questions to keep in mind:

  • How long should I be enrolled in a program?
  • What stages are included in the program?
  • What services/amenities are offered?
  • How much does it cost to enroll in a drug/alcohol treatment center?

Making the decision to enroll in a rehab program is a big milestone in itself. You want to be sure that when you select an addiction treatment program that you choose the best one for yourself and your situation. (if you have any ideas of what to add on here)

Levels of Care

Each individual person is going to have a different need than the next. Your situation is unique and should be treated as so. Finding what rehab treatment center is right for you is the first step, and in doing that you should inquire about what level of care is necessary for you. There are many different levels included in most rehab programs, for example: Medically-assisted detox, residential inpatient programs, partial-hospitalization, intensive outpatient (IOP), outpatient, and sober living. Your current condition is what determines what level you’re required to enroll in. If you struggle with substance abuse, enrollment in medically-assisted detox is mandatory before any other program.

Inpatient vs. Outpatient Rehab

What is the difference between an inpatient versus outpatient program? It’s just like it sounds, inpatient rehab requires you to stay inside the treatment center, whereas the outpatient process does not. The two programs supply the same type of treatment, one just has more restrictions than the other. There are different advantages to both programs. Depending on the severity of your condition and the environment that you cope better in is what will help you choose which one is right for you.

Advantages of inpatient treatment programs include a relief from your day-to-day schedule, as well as the opportunity to solely focus on recovering and getting yourself to the place you want to be. Inpatient care provides professionally trained staff to assist you and your every need. Most facilities will provide you with amenities that are free to use whenever you want. The inpatient level of care is supposed to accommodate you with a safe and secure environment to aid you in your recovery process.

Outpatient programs can offer you a completely different experience, while still receiving a majority of the benefits of inpatient care. The benefits of outpatient programs involve you getting to stay in the comfort of your own home while receiving the necessary treatment, you can plan your day the way you want to, and you’re free to continue working at your job or even attending school.

A major deal-breaker for most is that outpatient care is more affordable than inpatient… does that mean it’s better for you? Well, not necessarily. Again, for some individual cases, outpatient might not be the best option for you. Some people might not have the willpower or self-restraint to enroll in an outpatient program, and in some cases, people might cope better in the comfort of their own home. This is why it’s important to take your personal addiction and situation into consideration when choosing the right rehab facility for you. Both inpatient and outpatient care provide you with a phenomenal recovery process with several benefits.

Medically-Assisted Detox

A detox program is the first recommended step on your road to recovery. At Royal Life Centers, a detox treatment can typically range from 4-8 days, however it is different for everyone. Throughout this treatment process, we don’t want you to ever feel like you’re alone. A medical professional will always be by your side, even once you’re considered stable.

You are likely to experience symptoms from withdrawal, some more severe than others. Medically-assisted detox is recommended over a personal detox because most cannot handle the severe effects of withdrawal from their usual substance. Detox and withdrawal is overwhelming and sometimes life-threatening if one is not treated and taken care of properly. If you do not follow through with your detox process and it fails, the odds of a relapse are more likely to increase rapidly. Medically-assisted detox treatment is highly recommended for a successful outcome. Detox is not considered a replacement for treatment, however it is the first initial step in the recovery process.

Residential Inpatient Program for Addiction

Following a medically-assisted detox program, the residential inpatient program consists of weekly individual therapy sessions as well as group sessions five hours every day. In taking a holistic healing approach, the residential treatment process can contain individual and/or group therapy,  psychotherapy, anger management, recreational opportunities, etc. Our vision for these sessions is that it might restore not only the body, but the mind and spirit as well. Residential inpatient programs strive to supply individuals with a positive, comfortable environment for long-term recovery.

Partial-Hospitalization Programs

Partial-hospitalization program (PHP) is the next phase following the detox program and residential inpatient treatment and it is the first of three four-week phases (altogether a 12-week program). “PHP is the less structured, more flexible treatment option designed for guests who have completed detox and no longer require the 24/7 medical monitoring provided in our residential inpatient program.” PHP requires patients to attend group therapy sessions several hours a day, typically 3-5 days a week. At Royal Life Centers facilities, during PHP patients are required to lodge in our sober living. All rental fees are included in the cost of the program, along with 24/7 in-house staff, luxurious and spacious bedrooms, and plasma TV’s.

Intensive Outpatient Rehab Program

Intensive outpatient program (IOP) includes the next two phases following PHP, consisting of 8 weeks. In IOP, guests are able to continue their recovery process from the comfort of their own home. This is especially effective for the patients that can’t leave their day-to-day lives behind for too long. The Outpatient program grants patients the freedom and flexibility while still assisting them in creating a new “normal” and daily routine.

Phase one consists of group therapy 5 days a week for 3 hours a day. Phase two breaks down to group therapy only 3 sessions a week lasting about 3 hours each session. “Holistic treatment in IOP includes group, individual, movement/activity, adventure, and equine therapies, as well as psychiatry with medication management.” This program is designed to accompany patients in getting back on their feet and giving them activities and adventure to look forward to their future ahead.

Outpatient and Sober Living

Upon completing the 12-week aftercare program, patients are given the opportunity to continue outpatient care with the option to lodge in our very own sober living housing. As mentioned above, outpatient is the less restricted treatment option that allows you to stay in the comfort of your own home if you want. Patients can control their schedule, attend school, have a job, whatever they please- as long as they make their therapy session once a month and their weekly group therapy session on Sundays. Outpatient and Sober living are the last steps of completing your rehab treatment program. Oftentimes this is the most challenging stage for most guests because of the amount of freedom they receive. Sober living was designed to create a safe transition for patients from inpatient to outpatient living. The environment supports and considers recovering individuals by surrounding them with people who are on the same path as them.

What Happens After Completing Treatment at Rehab?

After completing rehab treatment, many often wonder “what’s next?”. Surrounding yourself with individuals that are on a similar recovery journey as you is important for long-term recovery. Many different rehab programs provide their patients with support and care even after they have finished the program. With our alumni services, guests are referred to specialists that will hold them accountable and also keep them on the right path to staying sober following treatment.

Alumni events are held monthly which cover meetings where alumni are free to share their experience with those in attendance and complimentary pizza is always provided. Our activity-related events have included but are not limited to: attending rodeos, laser tag, escape rooms, paintball, and many other outdoor and indoor activities.

Alumni coordinators connect you with any type of services you might need following recovery, such as: letters of completion, helping others into treatment, including guests in the alumni events, and any further care you might need. We want to ensure our guests that our support does not end when your treatment does.

Comprehensive Addiction Services

At Royal Life Centers, our comprehensive addiction services consist of multiple different components. Each one of our services offer our guests with separate plans that all have their individual benefits. Included in our individual treatment plan, we have our counseling and case management services, education services, and nutritional health services. Our counseling and case management services give access to a variety of therapy sessions, such as: individual/group therapy, activity/adventure therapy, and horse therapy. We strive to accommodate each and every individual’s form of receiving treatment. Our education services offer our GED scholarship program to patients throughout the 12-week program. Not only do we help guests obtain a GED certification, we also provide transportation to and from the college campus. Lastly, our nutritional health services supply recovery-sensitive menus in order to rebalance nutrition and health in each of our guests

Case Management

Case management can be defined as services that deliver assistance and guidance necessary to meet an individual’s health requirements. For our Case Management services we strive to accommodate the patients needs and wants, not the other way around.  This service provides our guests with their own personal case manager to help manage all of their social, legal, and even personal issues. At Royal Life Centers, we have structured our case management program around the clinical/rehabilitation model, dependent on our mission and structure. This broad-based model takes a comprehensive look at goal-planning and a flexible approach to resource referral, and places an emphasis on family- and self-support through therapeutic activities, such as therapy and skills-teaching.

What Do Case Managers Do?

Case managers are equipped to accommodate individuals who are in need of help or guidance in sometimes every area of their lives.. They implement, plan, and assess the specific treatment and services the individual needs. Each and every one of our guests are assigned a case manager upon entering our program. Their guidance is available to help assist you in relearning or regaining information to provide you with a smooth transition back into society. If need be, they accompany you in scheduling appointments, prescription refills, job opportunities, application processes, etc.

How Do I Go to Rehab If I Work Full-Time?

During the medical detox, residential inpatient, and partial-hospitalization program you are unable to work. Luckily, there is a solution if you are considering going into rehab but don’t want to lose your current job! Both the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) protect addicted individuals from discrimination and help them get the treatment they need without losing the jobs they need to survive. The FMLA states that employees are able to take leave for addiction purposes once a year for a 12-week period. Those 12 weeks are not usually paid, however you could always inquire about it with your employer. If they decline, you’re able to register for disability benefits until you’re able to go back to working full-time.

Throughout our intensive outpatient program (IOP) and it’s one-on-one sessions, guests will prepare themselves for employment through training that covers building your resume and practicing interviewing skills. If you wish to return to your former job, you are free to do so once you reach this phase in our aftercare program.

Life Skills Rehab Programs

We offer a wide range of programs that provide opportunities for our guests to not only do better but be better in life after treatment Throughout our treatment programs, our medical specialists and staff are present to give direction and advice at any hour. Our employment specialists offer guidance and support in building your resume, practicing interviewing skills and work etiquette, and then applying for jobs that interest and benefit you.

Another beneficial program includes all of our therapy options. We offer adventure therapy, yoga therapy, individual and group therapy, activity therapy, equine therapy, holistic therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Each and every one of these sessions will push you to relax and help release the body and mind. We offer such a wide variety because all guests resonate with one differently than the other. Individual therapy sessions can be most beneficial because they allow the guest to fully open up with no shame and pressure, while also receiving personal one-on-one guidance. All of our programs concentrate on renewing the mind, body, and spirit and that is what we strive to do throughout your process.

Continuing Education Programs for People in Recovery

Once you’ve reached the Intensive Outpatient (IOP) portion of the aftercare program is when you will be presented with the opportunity to obtain your GED certification. In the past you might’ve talked down to yourself about not being (sober, stable) enough to finish high-school, and now you can feel accomplished by obtaining your GED through the recovery process. We provide our guests with this opportunity as it is our commitment to help you succeed and thrive in our program. Classes begin in January and days/times will vary upon your location. The colleges and universities we have collaborated with cater to our guest’s ISP and plan their schedules accordingly, allowing them to continue their recovery process.

Rehabs with Built-In Employment Assistance

At Royal Life Centers, we provide our guests with the opportunity to become employed in early recovery. Our employment specialists are tailored to match our guests with jobs that best suit them individually. Each guest is guaranteed assistance in preparing them for the workforce through building their resume, interview practice, as well as making them aware of  proper work manners. We want to place our guests in work environments that they will succeed in and be comfortable in.

Accreditations

Royal Life Centers is proud to hold accreditations by the largest and most widely recognized accrediting bodies in the United States. Each and every one of our programs and  facilities have gone through an extensive, ongoing evaluation. Our staff members are all licensed professionals and are guaranteed to provide each guest the quality care they need and deserve.

What are Accreditations?

How To Spot a Trustworthy Rehabilitation Program for Addiction

When researching the best rehab programs near you, it is essential that you look into the type of process the treatment goes through as well as everything they offer you throughout it. Important factors to search for while looking into different rehab treatment programs:

  • Are there staff members on duty 24 hours a day?
  • What insurance providers are covered? If mine isn’t, how much would the overall treatment be?
  • How long is the rehab program? Do they tailor the process to my needs and personal situation?
  • What happens once I complete my treatment?
  • Who is the company accredited by?
  • Is onsite medical care provided?
  • What amenities are onsite?
  • Are the facilities safe and well-kept?
  • How do they prepare you for a better life after treatment?
  • Is there an alumni program? Do they hold you accountable after treatment?

These are all important questions to keep in mind when doing your rehab treatment search. Another important factor is to read testimonials from past patients who have experienced and completed the treatment process. Continue looking into programs until you’ve found the one that suits you, the one that is going to not only provide you with a successful outcome but also an experience you’re proud of.

How To Spot a Sketchy Rehabilitation Program for Addiction

We recommend that before you choose a rehab facility, you keep your eyes open for the common red flags that have been recorded in the past. Not all rehab treatment centers are looking out for your best interest, and we want to make sure you’re able to tell which ones those are so you don’t enroll in their program.

  • If a program offers to pay for your travel or insurance coverage, call your insurance company because this might be considered an illegal inducement.
  • If the treatment center is requiring daily tests, they are not doing it for your well-being. This will be billed to your insurance company and can cost thousands of dollars that is not required.
  • Lack of one-on-one therapy: Getting to know you as a person, your past, what you do/don’t like, how you function, etc. is a vital part of the recovery process. Most facilities will do more group therapy rather than individual therapy because it costs less.
  • Absence of accreditations and/or licenses: If a facility does not list or ensure these credentials, they are not going to provide you with quality treatment care.
  • If they offer limited programs: Treatment centers are supposed to offer a variety of services such as: different types of therapy, team-building activities, group and individual meetings/sessions, job placement programs, and alumni services that provide you with care even after you finish treatment.

You want to choose a rehab treatment center that is going to set you up for success and be with you every step of the way.

Amenities

Amenities in a rehab treatment center are key to attracting more patients. No, it is not the purpose of a rehab program, however amenities play a huge part in assisting guests on their road to recovery. Many would agree that having a clean, comfortable room to stay in is a lot more relaxing than the other way around. Fitness as well as outdoor activities are important to keep guests happy, healthy and motivated in their treatment process. Amenities are designed to make a guest feel at home and appreciated. They’re also provided so that patients feel like they’re doing more than just attending meetings, therapy sessions, and maintaining abstinence. Amenities add to the guests’ experience and give them something to look forward to occupying their day with outside of their sessions.

Luxury Rehab Amenities

Luxury rehab amenities can include but are not limited to:

  • Private rooms
  • Horseback Riding
  • Swimming
  • Fitness Programs
  • Gym access
  • Saunas, Yoga and Meditation classes
  • Laundry and Cleaning services

Basic Amenities to Expect in a Drug Rehab

In most rehab treatment facilities you can expect:

  • Basic furnished room
  • Cleaning and laundry services
  • Gym membership or daily/weekly workout activities to keep guests healthy and in shape
  • Three nourishing meals a day
  • Supervision from trained staff
  • Medical-care professionals on-staff

We strive to provide our guests with the most accommodating and comfortable living experience possible. Again, we recognize that amenities are not the focus of treatment programs, however it is our belief that they add a positive supplement to the process.

Cost of Drug and Alcohol Rehab

The cost of drug and alcohol treatment programs vary based on the type of program, the location of it, the duration of the treatment , as well as the  kind of amenities included. Some inpatient programs can cost around $10,000 for a 30-day program while popular treatment centers can cost about $20,000. For individuals in need of either a 60-day or 90-day program, this can range from $12,000-$60,000.

At Royal Life Centers our entire program includes: Medical detox, residential inpatient, Partial-hospitalization program (PHP), Intensive outpatient program (IOP), outpatient program, and then sober living. Our continuum of care is one of the least expensive in the country, costing under $20,000 for the 13-15 week process without insurance coverage.

Insurance Coverage for Substance Abuse Treatment

Depending on your provider, insurance should cover the majority of the cost of rehab treatment. This is not always the case, and with that comes other options. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) authorized that drug and alcohol abuse would be provided coverage through health insurance policies. This involves military insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, state-financed health insurance. Disability insurance might be an option if you’re in states such as: California, Hawaii, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, or Puerto Rico. Each state provides a different time period of benefits from the State Disability Insurance (SDI) starting at 26 weeks up to 52 weeks.

Not every insurance provider is going to cover every treatment center and plan, especially the one you might need. Unfortunately, you don’t always get to choose what your provider does or does not cover. “As a clinician, I see what a patient needs, but insurance determines what clients get,” says drug and alcohol counselor Charlene McPherson of Holistic Guidance Service in Los Angeles, Calif. “With something like holistic care, services such as yoga and massage may benefit a client, but the insurance company may not recognize that.” If this is the case and you’re adamant about enrolling in a specific program that is not covered by insurance, there is the option for private pay as well as a payment plan.

Private Pay Options for Drug and Alcohol Rehab

Private pay options may include loans, financing programs, scholarships, fundraising, payment plans, or even pay-in-full. Whatever works best for you and is most accommodating to your situation, that is the direction we want to guide you in. If your insurance does not cover treatment and you are unable to pay-in-full, don’t lose hope. There are plenty of other private payment options for you. American Addiction Centers lists a of corporations that provide financial assistance for those looking to enroll in a rehab program:

  • My Treatment Lender offers loans for substance abuse treatment. Loans range from $500 to $100,000 depending on the status of your credit. Visit their website for more information and to apply for a loan online. You can also call their customer service line at 1-800-440-4616.
  • Prosper provides healthcare financing with low interest rates and fixed monthly payments to help you pay for treatment. Visit their website or call their customer service line at 1-800-625-7412 for more information.
  • LightStream offers medical financing options. Depending on your credit, you may be eligible for a medical loan between $10,000 and $24,999.
  • Freedom Consultancy provides financing programs for treatment services through a network of registered service providers. Contact them through their website or at 1-801-938-3605.

The 10,000 Beds Scholarship Program is a well-known scholarship that collaborates with substance abuse treatment programs all over the country and donates at least one scholarship a year. Some of their selected partners provide several scholarships a year.

If your insurance does not cover your desired treatment plan, you are not helpless. There are so many different payment options that you can apply for or enroll in to get you the treatment you need and can afford.

Rehab Centers with Payment Plans

Most, if not all rehab treatment centers provide the option of a payment plan. For those whose insurance does not cover the costs of rehab treatment, opting into a payment plan might be the best alternative for you. This plan usually entails a month-by-month payment plan which only requires that you pay a monthly fee in increments.
