Treatment for Substance Abuse
Due to the nature of addiction, it’s understandable that the decision to enter treatment for substance abuse is already a hard decision. Having to worry about receiving poor-quality treatment is the last thing anyone wants to think about during this time. Above all else, it is important to receive treatment for substance abuse in a program that focuses on helping you recover from substance abuse.
Finding Treatment for Substance Abuse
Finding treatment for substance abuse can be difficult. Nowadays, it seems like there are addiction treatment programs everywhere. Well, it seems this way because there are! In fact, there are over 15,000 treatment facilities in the United States alone.
This staggering number can make it difficult to choose the best treatment for substance abuse for yourself or a loved one when it comes time to seek help. Sifting through the options and finding a program that meets your financial needs and personal needs, can be intimidating.
To further complicate things, there are some lesser-quality rehab centers out there that fail to make the health of the individuals in their care the highest priority. Instead, many treatment centers focus on their bottom line, looking to cash in on the epidemic of drug and alcohol addiction. That’s why knowing what to avoid when seeking for substance abuse treatment can make all the difference.
What to Look For When Seeking Treatment for Substance Abuse
There are several things to look out for when choosing a treatment center. Keeping these things in mind while researching treatment centers near you can help narrow down your search! Below are the green, yellow, and red flags of drug and alcohol treatment programs.
Licensing and Accreditation
Licensing and accreditations are a must when choosing a treatment center. Accreditation and licensure mean that the program is being held to a standard of treatment set forth by a recognized quality assurance organization. Without accountability, centers are unlikely to provide a level of care that will be conducive to recovery.
Excessive Drug Testing
Excessive drug testing has been a big issue with pop-up treatment centers over the years. If an addiction treatment program is drug testing on a daily basis, this is a red flag. If this is happening, most likely they are billing your insurance excessively for unnecessary tests. The only time daily drug testing could be appropriate is during a medical detox. This is to monitor the levels of toxins coming out of your system.
Lack of Therapy
A lack of therapy offerings is a huge red flag during addiction treatment. Many fraudulent recovery programs will lack any type of quality treatment. They may even lack any form of treatment at all. Good programs should offer a large selection of services, therapy, and medical care. Without these resources, it’s inappropriate to even call certain operators “treatment programs” at all.
Free Rent
Free rent, depending on the circumstances, is acceptable. For instance, most addiction treatment centers include housing within the cost of during detox, residential inpatient, and PHP. However, some sober homes will offer free rent to insured clients who attend a specific treatment center. The sober home then may receive an illegal kickback as a “thank you” from the treatment center for sending them a well-insured client. This type of rent-free situation is a big red flag. That being said, there are many sober living communities that legally work hand-in-hand with local treatment centers to ensure that people in recovery have access to housing.
*It is also important to remember that free rent for any level of care in SUD treatment is dependent on state regulations.*
