9 Questions to Ask Your Treatment Provider Before Drug Rehab

Seeking treatment for substance abuse is the first step in overcoming a substance use disorder. When researching detox and treatment facilities, it’s important that you ask certain questions to determine whether the program is right for you and fits your recovery needs, not the other way around.

For treatment to be effective and lasting, you need to select a treatment provider that will accommodate your needs, expected and unexpected. Qualifications, location and facility, licensure, staff, and continuing care policies are just several things that you should pay close attention to in your research.

Is the program state licensed? You’ll want to confirm whether the treatment program you’re considering is licensed to operate in the state in which it is located. You might also want to ask whether the facility is accredited.

What is the staff-to-guest ratio? When it comes to addiction treatment, the lower the staff-to-guest ratio, the better. Feeling valued and respected is essential in recovery, so plenty of support and individualized attention is what you should be looking for in a treatment provider.

What is your staff like? Ask about staff background and credentials. Are staff members licensed through the state department of health? Are nurses and physicians registered? Are any staff members in recovery? It’s important that staff members are supportive and knowledgeable and that they are passionate about helping you recover from substance abuse and get started on your recovery journey.

What is your facility like? Is the center clean, organized, and responsibly and efficiently run? You want to be in a place that is the most conducive to substance abuse treatment and that follows strict safety and procedure protocols.

Do you accommodate sexual orientation and physical disabilities and provide age, gender, and culture-appropriate treatment services? Everyone deserves the best substance abuse treatment, regardless of age, gender, or beliefs.

How is my family involved in my treatment? Some treatment providers believe that family inclusion is essential to recovery, while others do not. Some programs will incorporate family members into guests’ treatment plans and/or allow family visits.

Is family counseling available/what services are available to families? Whether or not you want familial involvement in your treatment, you should find out what role family will play and whether the provider offers services or referral services to family members.

What is your policy on medication-assisted treatment? Whether or not you or your family members are open to medication-assisted treatment (MAT), you should find out whether or not the provider offers it. Just one more thing to keep in mind, MAT may work well in conjunction with psychiatric care for some people.

What are my aftercare options? You’ll want to make sure that you have your aftercare arrangements made prior to entering treatment. Your treatment provider may offer an aftercare option, or they may refer you to someone else, but it’s important to have a plan in place following the first stages of substance abuse treatment (typically detox and/or residential inpatient).
