There are countless components to a quality drug addiction aftercare treatment program.

While therapy and the coping techniques of recovery all give you considerable control over how successfully and rapidly you recover, it’s important to recognize and remember what you can control and what you can’t. Don’t set yourself up for failure by expecting everything to change for you all at once.
You can control your own behavior, but not when you’re drinking or taking drugs. You can’t control your feelings, but you can control how you act because of them. Very decidedly, you can control how you act because of them.
You can’t control what other people feel or do or say. You can control your behavior toward them, which may influence what they feel or do, but don’t count on it.
This issue of control—a central issue in recovery—is perfectly summed up in the prayer with which many self-help groups end their meetings: “Life show me the serenity to accept what I cannot change, the courage to change what I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”
Working on Yourself in Aftercare
Aftercare is also time to continue improving on any of the following primary potholes on the road to recovery:
- Minimizes the disease of chemical dependence
- Life story lacks honesty
- Lacks commitment to recovery
- Blames others for own shortcomings
- Is complying with treatment only to satisfy others
- Sees self as a victim/filled with self-pity
- Too many concerns outside of treatment
- Overly defensive when confronted/unsurrendered
- Overvalues self
- Talks too much/poor listener
- Wants to do it alone/will not ask for help
- Constantly testing, breaking rules
- Hides true feelings/wears a mask
- Hidden anger/resentful
- Not in touch with feelings
- Hypocritical/talks the talk, doesn’t walk the walk
- Too serious, no sense of humor
- Does not trust others
- Preoccupied with past/unduly guilty
- Projects a gloomy future
- Isolated/avoids others
- Too passive, doesn’t assert self-enough
- Low self-esteem
Aftercare is when you finally begin to achieve full recovery. There, you will then discover the gifts of recovery. Aftercare is the time to fully digest all that you have learned through out addiction treatment thus far.
Chief among these are discoveries about yourself as a functioning human being. Recovering people grow stronger, become physically healthier and mentally more competent. Gradually a recovering person will lose his fears about alcohol and drug related diseases while gaining, concentration, memory, clarity, purpose, love, and spirituality (which doesn’t necessarily mean religion). The recovery process can be so rewarding that some of our patients have actually taken us by surprise:
“I never thought I could look so good.”
“I got paid yesterday, and I still have some money left.”
“I actually enjoyed going to work again.”
“Maybe I will go back to school.”
“Life without nosebleeds—who would have thought it.”
“No more lies.”
“Somebody actually loves me.”
